Max and Coral McCauley have had an affiliation with the Gold
Guitars from day dot, with Max part of the original Country Style
Promotions group who after disbanding, gifted funds to the Gore
Country Music Club for a talent show.
Members of the Country Style Promotions Committee, Garth
Gibson, Stewart Abernethy, Bill Abernethy, Dusty Spittle, Ray
Ferguson, Max McCauley and Richard Tutty presented the first
Gold Guitars trophy to Patsy Riggir in 1974.
From these humble beginnings, the New Zealand Gold Guitar
Awards were born.
Max spent 11 years on the Gold Guitar committee mainly
contacting professional artists, some of whom he knew personally.
''At that time I was touring with Maria Dallas and also on Country
Touch with Tex Morton.''
The Gold Guitar Awards have come a long way from the initial
one day event with 34 entrys says Max.
''Most people thought we wouldn't last long and this year 761
entrants speaks for itself.''
Max says back then, the committee wanted Gore to be the capital
of New Zealand Country Music and with a great deal of hard work
by all the committee members over the years, this has now
become a reality.
He continues to enjoy catching up with fellow musicians and the
many friends he and his wife Coral have made both in Gore and in
His best memory was when the Gore Country Music Club finally
got their own premises, however the worst memory was watching
it burn to the ground at 3 o'clock one morning.
Max hopes the Gold Guitar Awards have a positive future in Gore.
''If we have the right people it will continue to grow,'' he says.

She says it is hard to believe that it is 40 years since
she flew to the South Island to enter the inaugural
Gore Gold Guitar Awards.
''I could not imagine how my success in winning
Best Female Vocalist and Overall Winner would
change my life.
''It was the first major step in the pursuit of a career
as a Country Music singer in the entertainment
industry, eclipsing all my previous achievements.''
Since then, Patsy has represented New Zealand in
Hong Kong, Australia, Tennessee and Texas, proudly
carrying the Kiwi flag.
Along the way there have been many gold and
platinum albums and performances alongside some
of Country Music's greatest singers and musicians as
well as at the Grand Ole Opry.
Her television appearances included a regular guest
spot on the popular ''That's Country'' series, the
''Beautiful Lady'' special, followed by the highly-
acclaimed six part series ''Patsy Riggir Country''. This
led to the ''Patsy Riggir Christmas Special''.
Pastsy has won numerous awards, including New
Zealand Entertainer of the Year and five Australian
Gold Guitars (Tamworth). She also performed many
concerts throughout the country.
